DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
As the lead UX Designer on this project, being my first project out in the real world I was very excited to work with the Vice President of the company to bring his idea to life! The Modena Smart Home app, connects Modena’s product family to your iOS device as as well as Amazon Alexa and Google home for voice control without the need for any hub! Effortlessly monitor, control and automate your lights from anywhere!
Background
Being my first company out of school – I joined Iaconic Design as the Lead User Experience Designer, working on both the creation of the mobile app along with creating an entirely new website design for Iaconic Design. Along with designing marketing materials I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with the Vice President of Iaconic Design to create the Modena Smart Home App.
Some key achievements of which I have listed below:
Market Research and User Personas. This has helped our team establish more structure to how we conduct our work and allow other teams to gain visibility across our upcoming sprints.
Turned an Idea into a Product! Transforming an idea into something much more tangible is a process that is both exciting and rewarding. I worked closely with the Vice President of Iaconic Design, to shape his vision into a product. While the product has been released out onto the Mac App Store, it was a great experience to be a part of creating a product from thin air!
Created a product from nothing. The Modena Smart Home app, is out on Mac App Store you to review!
Market Research
Market research was created for this product, coming into this company there was a little bit of research that was done but we worked on more and got the chance to be a part of the Home and Garden show at BC Place so we could gather more information about what specific individuals are interested in implementing these high-end smart light switches into their home. As you can see below, we were able to create an entire flow based on the feedback.
Gathering insights & Wireframing the Solution
After collecting additional information regarding the specific personas/target audience for the Modena Smart Home app. We were able to create an entire user flow of the app, as you can see below this is a high-fidelity layout but we did start from scratch as you can see above, we first focused on the flow to see if we were missing any states and if everything was correct.
High-fidelity User Flow
From the low-fidelity we were able to create a flow! As you can see we’ve created the high-fidelity layout within Adobe XD.
End Result
This project took us about two years to create, gathering information for the types of users is what took the longest and was the most challenging. As you really want to get started on a project like this but we needed to gather the necessary information and there were iterations after iterations based on correcting the user flow of this product as it was quite complex.
Conducting lots of user research and market research was extremely important for this along with a competitive analysis. Once the high-fidelity was created, we didn’t have enough money to conduct usability testings on the specific target audience but I really wanted to create a good product, so I conducted on friends on family which was extremely helpful!
As you can see below, the finished product was sent over the the Mac App Store!
